Problem of the Hard Water

Good water – comfort in every drop

Impure water affects more than just our health. In our households, where water is used for a multitude of purposes besides drinking, its poor quality is a nuisance and a source of problems in everyday life.

Lime scale is perhaps the toughest issue. An irritating hindrance at first, this tenacious brown substance turns into a grievous problem over time. Life becomes less comfortable and we often remain unaware of the full scale of the damages.

This has nothing to do with where the water comes from – scale will form regardless, especially when the water is heated.

Hard water used daily stimulates the formation of scale.

Hard water – the source of all problems with lime scale

Hard water is not a health hazard, but it does affect the way we feel. Using hard water is a nuisance not only because of mineral buildup. Being an universal solvent, water dissolves minerals - mainly calcium and magnesium - as it moves through soil and rock. These minerals held in solution are chiefly responsible for water hardness. The more minerals in it, the harder the water.

Where does scale come from?

Everything boils down to the difference in the electric potential between water and what it flows through.

In the natural environment, the Earth’s magnetic field is responsible for water having a higher electric potential than the surrounding rocks. Thus, water is capable of attracting and consequently dissolving minerals making up the rocks. Installations and appliances have a higher electric potential than the water that flows through them. All the minerals dissolved in the water are precipitated inside the equipment. The result is scale.

Water-heating appliances, like heaters, washing machines etc., are most at risk of damage due to lime scale. The thicker the layers of hard and dense scale formed inside these devices, the bigger the problems with efficient performance. Cold water wreaks less havoc. Scale formed at a lower temperature is washed away and circulates in the water supply and sewage disposal systems as aragonite.

Lime scale is as common as the hard water we use all the time. It forms everywhere, on water heaters, kettle walls, vessels, and it keeps on growing. And with it grow all the problems that have to be dealt with as a result.
